Today we left Hog Island around 7:30 and traveled to the mainland for a two hour drive south to get a boat to Stratton Island that is one of Audubon's Seabird Islands. There we worked on invasive plant removal and repairs to the shed. We saw lots of birds today including four Oyster Catchers, Gannett and a rare for this area Lark Sparrow. It was the first time for me to see a Shoveler. I'm including photos that are not great but show some of the birds we saw today. In the evening we were treated to a talk by Dr. Kevin McGowan on the interesting lives of seabirds. Kevin is the instructor for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Home Study Course in Bird Biology and a new online short-course, "Courtship and Rivalry in Birds. |
